Lexical Knowledge Engineering: MikroKosmos Revisited
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper will describe the MikroKosmos methodology for the knowledge engineering of a computational lexicon used for text analysis. To do so, the paper outlines the general requirements for a knowledge base to be used for NLP, followed by specific requirements for building the lexical knowledge source. To highlight the issue of efficiency and reusability, the paper will contrast knowledge engineering for text analysis using the syntactic realizations of predicate logic against knowledge engineering for text analysis using lexical constraint satisfaction in combination with a world-model, or ontology. The paper suggests that the most efficient approach to the representation of natural language for analysis is the ontological and lexical semantic modeling (Onyshkevych & Nirenburg, 1994). Lexical semantics makes constraints accessible centrally from the concepts rather than through assertions of logic. References are made in this paper to the structuring of the English generation lexicon for the MikroKosmos KBMT project, a knowledgebased machine translation system based on deepmeaning analysis and text generation, developed at New Mexico State University, Computing Research Laboratory.

Lexical Acquisition with WordNet and the Mikrokosmos Ontology
This paper discusses an approach to augmenting a lexicon for knowledge-based machine translation (KBMT) with information derived from WordNet. The Mikrokosmos project at NMSU's Computing Research Laboratory has concentrated on the creation of the Spanish and Japanese lexicons, so the English lexicon is less developed. We investigated using WordNet as a means to automate portions of the English ...
متن کاملOntology Development for Machine Translation: Ideology and Methodology
In the Mikrokosmos approach to knowledge-based machine translation, lexical representation of word meanings as well as text meaning representation is grounded in a broad-coverage ontology of the world. We have developed such a language-neutral ontology for the purpose of machine translation in the situation of the Mikrokosmos project. In order to acquire a fairly large ontology with limited tim...
متن کاملLexical Semantics of Adjectives A Microtheory of Adjectival Meaning
This work belongs to a family of research efforts, called microtheories and aimed at describing the static meaning of all lexical categories in several languages in the framework of the MikroKosmos project on computational semantics. The latter also involves other static microtheories describing world knowledge and syntax-semantics mapping as well as dynamic microtheories connected with the act...
متن کاملReusing the Mikrokosmos Ontology for Concept-based Multilingual Terminology Databases
This paper reports work carried out within a multilingual terminology project (OncoTerm) in which the Mikrokosmos (μK) ontology (Mahesh, 1996; Viegas et al 1999) has been used as a language independent conceptual structure to achieve a truly concept-based terminology database (termbase, for short). The original ontology, containing nearly 4,700 concepts and available in Lisp-like format (Januar...
متن کاملACADEMIC WRITING REVISITED: A PHRASEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF APPLIED LINGUISTICS HIGH-STAKE GENRES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF LEXICAL BUNDLES
Lexical bundles are frequent word combinations that commonly appear in different registers. They have been the subject of much research in the area of corpus linguistics during the last decade. While most previous studies of bundles have mainly focused on variations in the use of these word combinations across different registers and a number of disciplines, not much research has been done to e...
